Stephen Birmingham, Portfolio Manager, uses his extensive experience and asset-allocation expertise to manage clients’ investments. Working in tandem with the financial coaches at Goldman Financial Planning, he implements the investment plans the coaches establish with clients. His goal is to generate the returns that help make each financial plan successful while taking individuals’ risk preferences into account.
The foundation for Stephen’s career was in place long before college because his father, an investor, gave his family exposure to investing. Although Stephen planned to study engineering in college, he discovered that he preferred economics. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics, but due to a recession, he was hired as a bank teller. When his job expanded to trading stocks and bonds, his superiors noticed his capabilities. Soon he was managing clients’ accounts. Amidst bank acquisitions, his trade specialist position with Maine Bank and Trust eventually turned into the role of senior Portfolio Manager. After 18 years in the business, Stephen retired as vice president at People’s United Bank®.
Stephen came out of retirement two years later when he found a financial planning firm where he could use his investment skills. Goldman Financial Planning was the perfect fit because the organization’s approach coincided with his methods. He also shared the company’s primary focus: doing what is best for clients. Stephen prefers working at a smaller company where he can empower individuals to reach their goals. He likes helping people by translating the investment world for them.
Stephen loves boating of any kind, including sailing, power-boating and rowing crew. An amateur hockey player, he is also a volunteer for the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Maine Island Trail® Association and Portland Community Rowing Association. Stephen lives in Cape Elizabeth with his wife, who first got him interested in rowing.
